About This Place

Located in the heart of Opp, Alabama, Hook's Bar-B-Q is a treasured local barbecue restaurant that perfectly captures the essence of Southern BBQ culture. This cozy, mom-and-pop style joint offers a welcoming atmosphere where friendly service meets mouthwatering, slow-cooked barbecue that keeps locals—and travelers—coming back for more.

Their menu is a carnivore’s delight, with standout dishes like the Hamburger Steak Plate and the Rib Plate served alongside crispy, golden fried okra and a refreshing side salad. The BBQ Pork 1/2 Pound with Mild Sauce is a must-try, boasting tender, juicy pork glazed in a perfectly balanced sauce that’s smoky without overpowering. For those seeking variety, the Pulled Pork Dinner offers a generous portion of fall-off-the-bone meat, paired delectably with classic Southern sides. If you’re feeling adventurous, the Whizbang Sampler provides a generous selection of their finest meats and sides, ideal for sharing.

Sides at Hook’s are nothing short of exceptional. From buttery potatoes to BBQ Chicken Potato and the ever-popular Pork Fries and Chicken Fries, each bite is packed with flavor and comforting textures. The sauces and accompaniments—like their ranch dressing, highly praised by fans—bring an extra layer of richness that amplifies the BBQ experience.

Don’t miss Hook’s daily specials such as the Tailgate Special #2, which offers a hearty feast perfect for a group gathering or a weekend celebration. The prices are fair and competitive, underscoring the value Hook’s delivers without sacrificing quality or taste.

Guests consistently rave about Hook’s genuine hospitality. Stacy McEwan describes the team as “spectacular,” highlighting how they made a party of 15 feel right at home with attentive and warm service. Meanwhile, Charo extols the “top notch local BBQ” that surpasses many chain BBQ spots in Alabama, praising the combination of the pork with hot BBQ sauce, crispy onion rings, creamy cole slaw, flavorful beans, and classic potato salad.

While opinions on flavor vary, with Travis Huber noting that the BBQ sauce leans toward a sweeter, ketchupy style, the quality of the meat—especially the fall-off-the-bone tenderness—remains undeniable. Even non-meat eaters like Cornelia Thrash have found delight in the sides, such as the perfectly fried okra and crispy onion rings, proving Hook’s appeal extends beyond just barbecue lovers.

Whether you’re a BBQ aficionado seeking authentic Southern smokehouse flavors or a curious traveler wanting a taste of Opp’s local eats, Hook’s Bar-B-Q delivers hearty plates, honest hospitality, and a genuine slice of Alabama tradition. Just be wary of the pound cake—a choice some might want to skip—but everything else on the menu promises a satisfying and flavorful experience.

Hook's Bar-B-Q is conveniently located at 601 US-331 BUS, Opp, AL 36467, and can be reached at +1 334-493-4060. It’s the perfect spot when BBQ cravings call for something real, flavorful, and deeply satisfying.

Top notch local BBQ with great service and great prices. The taste was fantastic and better than any BBQ chains we’ve visited in AL. The pork with the hot BBQ sauce, onion rings, cole slaw, beans and potato salad were superb.

Just a little mom and pop BBQ joint pretty much. But their BBQ is GOOOODDDD!! I get the pork fries every time. Their ranch is OH SO AMAZING! The pound cake is DISGUSTING though.

Hook’s is very okay for a BBQ joint. The meat is fall-off-the-bone tender, but nothing to write home about as far as flavor goes, in my opinion. If you are in the area and need a place to eat, I would recommend this place. Going out of your way like we did… I don’t know that I would do that again. The BBQ sauce was very ketchupy… I guess if that is the way you like it, then this may be the place for you, but just not my style.

So, I don't eat meat but decided to stop at a BBQ joint because I remembered that they usually have the best sides and I was right! Their fried okra and onion rings were delicious!!!

Wanted to have ribs but they were out. So have to come early if you’d like ribs. The pulled pork was good, as well as the baked beans. Hubby said his regular chicken plate was good. I liked the homemade style cut fries. The mild bbq sauce is vinegary based, so if that’s not your thing, maybe get the sweet bbq sauce. Pound cake came with the meal and we liked it. 2 pieces of Plain old white bread, not grilled.

This has to be the very very best southern barbecue we’ve ever eaten. We are extremely picky. Everything is so fresh and all homemade. Even the bread ( I believe ). The pound cake is most definitely home made AND it’s every bit as delicious as my mum’s homemade pound cake. Their sauces are home made, the coleslaw with a touch of relish makes it special. The portions are HUGE!! The prices are not outrageous. We will be back here to camp at Frank Jackson state park and will look forward to eating at Hooks again. Wow what a great barbecue!!
